BioI am a Ph.D. candidate in history, focusing on gender and race in the Atlantic world. I actually have an approved dissertation topic and am very slowly moving towards actually writing something down for the dissertation. I work as an archivist/Quality Assurance Specialist, but I don't know what I want to do for a living yet. Good thing I have 5 years of grad school left.
We have eight ferrets, Murphy, Barnum, Grommit, Alice, Lola, Finnegan, Marta and JD; two cats, Bijou and Goblin; an iguana Miguel, a Turkish gecko and two very large fishtanks (SA cichlids and angels).
I have a massive book collection that is beginning to take over my house (yes, books compete with animals for space). The majority of it is history and fantasy. I love to read, and do so constantly, I am rarely without a book in my hands. Some of the authors I am currently addicted to are Kelley Armstrong, Mercedes Lackey, Laurel K. Hamilton, George R. R. Martin and Jacqueline Carey. When it comes to history, I am mainly interested in intellectual, social and cultural history of the 18th and 19th century English speaking world, particularly the American Revolution, early slave societies and studies of gender and violence. I also am interested in history of the body. I have written on women soldiers and republican motherhood, unfree sailors in Virginia's state navy during the Revolution and race in Hawaii/the Massie Affair. I am currently working on my dissertation on antislavery women's societies in the US and Britain.
I make and sell ferret hammocks and other bedding to support FerretsFirst and Rocky's Ferret Rescue. Please check out my site and place an order to support these two great shelters.
PS. The majority of my LJ is friends only. It is that way because certain family members found it and were reading it and got upset because I voiced opinions they didn't agree with in it. Occasionally I like to bitch about my husband, or family or whatever and I don't need the drama and its easier just to lock everything. Add me if you want.
